In 1856, the Democratic President Franklin Pierce was unpopular, so the Democrats knew they couldn't nominate him again. Instead, they went with James Buchanan, who had been in politics for decades but also happened to be out of congress or out of the country during all of the most controversial debates. Because of this, there wasn't much to hold against Buchanan. He won the election, but his presidency waes pretty rough. He didn't get renominated in 1860, and when Abraham Lincoln won the election, and the Southern states seceded as a result, Buchanan proceed to do nothing.
